Kate Racculia tells a wonderful story in Tuesday Mooney Talks to Ghosts with well developed characters that are both personable and three dimensional, so much so that I was sad to say goodbye to Tuesday Mooney, the main character, when the story came to an end. The main storyline is unique and intriguing and, again, is personable in the sense that the characters were realistic in their responses, their depth and humanity. The multiple narratives kept me hooked and I was surprised by, and enjoyed, the ending. It is a bit of an adventure and a bit of a mystery, a story of friendship and romance, with characters that I cared about. I think this would be a great book group book and may recommend it to ours. I will read more of this author.

colleenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15721646180719249292noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6453755031491762582.post-39838808275012085582020-06-18T12:21:00.002-07:002020-06-18T12:22:03.486-07:002020 Online Summer Reading Program

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 12pt; white-space: pre-wrap;">I also recently reread this book and I also liked it just as much the second time. Love and Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch is a book about a girl named Carolina (pronounced leena). Lina’s mother dies from cancer and she is sent unwillingly to Italy to live with her father, Howard. When she gets there, she finds a journal that her mother had kept when she was living in Italy, almost 17 years ago. While she makes her way through the journal, Lina finds out things about her mother’s earlier life that she had never even imagined. Lina makes friends who help her on her journey of discovering more about her mom and she falls in love, obviously.

She meets up with her childhood friend, Davis Pickett, and helps him get through a hard time. This book was super interesting to me because she has such deep, strange thoughts and the book follows all her spirals. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6453755031491762582.post-47072406480276824162020-04-29T09:22:00.004-07:002020-04-29T09:23:08.620-07:00The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich

I was very excited about Louise Erdrich's new book, The Night Watchman, and was not disappointed! The nuances of descriptive detail draw me in like few other authors that I know. I never feel as though I know or can assume what is going to happen in her stories. That ability to create intrigue in the daily life of her characters is, for me, what makes the story come to life.

This story did leave me wanting more at the end. And I don't mean a happy ending with all the bits tied up in nice little bow, it's that I felt the story ended too abruptly. But then, that is, I suppose, an indication of how fondly I had grown of the characters. I hope there will be more stories with these characters.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #404040; font-family: "open sans" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Hailsham seems like a pleasant English boarding school, far from the influences of the city. Its students are well tended and supported, trained in art and literature, and become just the sort of people the world wants them to be. But, curiously, they are taught nothing of the outside world and are allowed little contact with it. Within the grounds of Hailsham, Kathy grows from schoolgirl to young woman, but it's only when she and her friends Ruth and Tommy leave the safe grounds of the school (as they always knew they would) that they realize the full truth of what Hailsham is.colleenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15721646180719249292noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6453755031491762582.post-25559911237607073952020-01-09T14:49:00.002-08:002020-01-09T14:53:55.206-08:00Happy New Year!
I loved this book. I believe I gave it 5 stars on the Goodreads website, which is a rare occurrence for me. It is just the right blend of fiction and history, with excellent detail on specific areas of life that I know little about-- book conservation (which I found fascinating) and Jewish history (also fascinating, but in a different way). I enjoy deeply developed characters and this book provided several, both in the protaganist and in the Haggadah itself .
I hope to renew the library blog in 2020 and thought I'd start right here, with a nod to my books of 2019, thanks to Goodreads willingness to share. I read some very very good books this year, along with the mediocre and the not-so-good, and look forward to sharing them with you. Enjoy!
This book is another book set in the future. This future includes the fact that, the day you die, you will receive a call from Death-Cast. Death-Cast is a company that calls everyone the day they will die, warning them. It is a very suspenseful story, and ends on a cliffhanger. They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera is a multiple character story in which all the characters overlap in their stories.
This book starts out with the story of Mateo Torrez. Mateo's mother died while giving birth to him, and his father is in a coma. Mateo lives alone in his family's apartment with the neighbors checking in on him. On the day he gets his call, Mateo downloads an app called the Last Friend App. The Last Friend App is an app where you can communicate with other people who are dying and might want to hang out and do something fun on their End Day. Mateo downloads the app...
The second story is the story of Rufus Emeterio. Rufus's story starts out with him beating his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend up. The boyfriend's name is Peck. All of a sudden, Rufus gets his call from Death-Cast. He calls the fight off, and then he drives to the church where he and Aimee (his ex-girlfriend) went on their first date, and he texts her. She calls him back, and he insists they need to meet up. Aimee, Rufus's friends Tagoe and Malcolm, and his foster parents throw him a funeral. Aimee brings Peck as well. Rufus doesn't like that, and he has a good reason not to. Halfway through Rufus's funeral, the cops come to get Rufus because he beat Peck up. Rufus has to go on the run. Eventually, he comes to rest at a gas station. At the gas station, Rufus sees graffiti advertising the Last Friend App. Rufus downloads the app...
The rest of the story is about how Rufus and Mateo meet their last friends, and have adventures with them. There are also other sections of the story about different characters who somehow overlap with the section before it. I think this book was very interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes suspense and stories about friendship. The cover of this book was actually the thing that caught my eye. I mean, you look at it and you could imagine the story going a bunch of different ways. I never would've guessed the way it actually went.
In The Other Side of the Island, by Allegra Goodman, a girl named Honor moves from the North with her mother and father to Island 365. Island 365 is very different than the North. For example, the sky is artificially colored a different color for every hour of the day. Honor can't go out after dark, and in school she learns all about the Earth Mother, who supposedly is protecting everyone on Island 365. The Earth Mother keeps them safe with The Enclosure, an invisible shield that surrounds all the islands.
In school, Honor also becomes friends with a boy her age, named Helix. The class that is most difficult for Honor, is geography. In geography, she studies maps of the many islands in the Tranquil Sea. After a while, Honor realizes that her family is different from the rest of the inhabitants of the island in many ways. "Different" islanders "disappear."
Honor must decide what is more important; being true to herself and saving her family, or fitting in with the others on the island.
I loved this book. It is suspenseful, it is mysterious... it clearly describes a world that very well may become our future. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a mystery, and who likes stories about alternate realities; possibly in the future.
ago, a few friends of mine recommended a
book series that they absolutely loved, called "Ranger's
Apprentice". At the time, I was probably reading Percy Jackson, or Harry
Potter, or Redwall, so I couldn't read it, and then forgot about
it. Then, just the other day, I was at the library looking for something to
read, and the first book in the series, The Ruins of Gorlan by John Flanagan, caught my eye. I grabbed it off the
shelf and went home. Often times, I can determine how much I enjoy a book by
how quickly I read it. I devoured this one in a matter of hours, and went to go
get the next few in the series!

is a fantastic author. He manages to create a world that seems not too far off
from our own distant past, while still maintaining its uniqueness and individuality.
I loved reading about the brave Araluens, the evil Morgorath and his Wargal
soldiers, and the seafaring mercenary Skandians. The books revolve mostly
around a young boy, Will, who becomes apprenticed to one of the King's Rangers,
mysterious hooded figures who help keep the peace around the kingdom. The books
are full of high adventure, bravery, chivalry, and memorable characters. I'm
still reading through the series myself, and definitely encourage you to check
out the series, too!

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre;">

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre;">Another audio book/series I listened to as a young child was the Chronicles of Narnia series.
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre;">If you haven’t heard of the Chronicles of Narnia, it’s a fantasy series written by C.S. Lewis.
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre;">He wrote and released the books in one order, and then rearranged them into a
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre;">chronological order. The <span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre;">series is all about young people from our world being summoned
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre;">in various ways to a magical land called Narnia. Each time they are summoned by a
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre;">mysterious and powerful Lion named Aslan. Over the past few weeks I’ve been re-listening
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre;">to a few of my favorites in the series.

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre-wrap;">Book #3-The Horse and His Boy. This story is different than all of the others, since the entire book centers around a character who lives in the world of Narnia, rather than a visitor from our world. It’s all about a boy named Shasta, who lives in a country that is close to the southern borders of Narnia. Two horses, he and another child have to escape to Narnia, and on the way each learns an important lesson about their own shortcomings.

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre-wrap;">Book #6-The Silver Chair. Two children from our world are summoned to Narnia to find a lost prince and save him from an evil witch and her enchantments. This book is one of my favorites because C.S. Lewis does an even better job than usual of creating instantly classic and loveable characters, no matter how depressed and moping they are all the time.

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre-wrap;">Book #7-The Last Battle. In this book, the last King of Narnia, two children from our world, and a small group of Narnians who are still loyal to Aslan must fight to survive and remember the true nature of Aslan. As you read through the books, it becomes increasingly more obvious that C.S. Lewis wrote the book as an allegory for his Christian beliefs. In this book in particular, as Aslan stands and brings forth the end of Old Narnia and the beginning of New Narnia, it is clear that these excellent books were never just about adventure, but something much deeper.

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre-wrap;">Overall, this is one of my favorite series of all time. It blends excellent storytelling with important moral lessons to create a story for the ages. Children, teenagers, and adults throughout the years have enjoyed these books and continue to enjoy them. This is one of series I would recommend to anyone without fear of them not enjoying it.

The characters are so quaint and quirky, it’s hard not to fall in love with them. My favorite thing about this book is how well the author displays the locations in the book to you. If you enjoy reading books with incredibly rich visual descriptions, well rounded characters, and happy endings, then this book is for you!

The characters are instantly loveable, and it’s incredibly creative as well, with all sorts of fabulous and fantastic creatures filling its pages. There are dragons, brownies, dwarves, fairies, and so much more!

It also strongly shows how good can always come from the most evil things. This is definitely within my top 10 all-time favorite books, and I hope you’ll read it and enjoy it as much as I have.

The Last of the Mohicans was written in 1825 by James Fenimore Cooper, and is a story about adventure, danger, and love during the French and Indian War, and set in 1757 North America.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> The story begins as two young women, daughters of a British general, begin to travel down south from the Great Lakes. They are accompanied by Duncan Heyward, a soldier, and friend of their family, and David Gamut, a minstrel. They are also accompanied by a Native American named Magua, who is from the Huron tribe.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">They are joined in their journey by a frontier scout named Hawkeye, and two Mohican Indians named Chingachgook and Uncas, a father and son, and Magua leaves their party for the time being. After being attacked by some Indians, the company finally comes to the fort where the girls’ father is. An overwhelmingly large number of French and Indian troops are preparing to besiege it, but their general sends in offers of a surrender that is too lenient to pass up so the fort gives in.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> The company is attacked by the Hurons, led by Magua as they leave, and the two girls and the musician are carried off. The rest of the book is about the group that is following them to bring them back. I won’t spoil it for you, but the ending is incredibly touching.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">There is sacrifice, true love, and duty all wrapped up into one book. The author does an incredible job of showing the realness of the situation and how people would react. I believe that a lot of people could learn from the selfless actions portrayed here.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Probably my favorite part of this book was how the author painted the characters like a landscape. It was easy to get to know the characters and identify with each of them in a different way. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good adventure story!
